SMALL INCISION LENTICULE EXTRACTION –
SMILE stands for “small incision lenticule extraction,” and is one of the most advanced options for treating myopia (nearsightedness). A small incision is made, and a section of your cornea is removed through the incision. LASIK and PRK already have minimal risks or discomfort, but the minimally invasive nature of SMILE surgery can lead to an even smoother recovery.
LASIK: Trusted Vision Correction
SURGERY in Mesa
You’ve probably heard of LASIK, an acronym for laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis, which is practically synonymous with “laser eye surgery”. The FDA approved LASIK in 1999, and it quickly became the standard for people with mild-to-moderate refractive vision issues. The procedure involves using a laser to reshape part of your cornea, which corrects several refractive vision issues, including myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism. With over 700,000 patients receiving LASIK surgery every year — and a success rate between 96-98% — it’s easy to understand why LASIK is so popular.
Even with those high success rates, however, choosing the right LASIK surgeon can make a major difference in your outcomes and recovery process. While LASIK is excellent at treating a variety of refractive vision issues, it is not a one-size-fits-all solution. That’s why our team at Carrot Eye Center uses a custom procedure built around your needs, that may also involve elements from the following procedures.

Refractive lens Exchange –
RLE, or refractive lens exchange, is a multipurpose eye surgery that can correct severe hyperopia (farsightedness), and in particular, presbyopia (farsightedness that worsens with age). With RLE, your eye’s natural lens is replaced with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). These IOLs are highly customizable and can drastically improve your vision. RLE is identical to the lens replacement used in cataract surgery, since both replace your lens with a synthetic IOL.
Implantable Collamer® lens – ICL
ICL (implantable Collamer® lens) is another one of the state-of-the-art vision correction services available at Carrot Eye Center. This procedure involves implanting a lens into your eye that works with your eye’s natural state. Like SMILE, ICL is used to treat myopia (nearsightedness), especially severe cases — ICL can correct up to -20 diopters. ICL is an excellent option, not only for its range of myopia correction, but also for its interchangeability: if your prescription changes, your ICL may be removed or exchanged.
PHOTOREFRACTIVE KERATECTOMY- PRK
PRK — photorefractive keratectomy — is a favorable alternative to LASIK for certain patients. For instance, because LASIK involves the creation of a corneal flap, you can’t re.ceive LASIK if your cornea is too thin. PRK, meanwhile, only reshapes the surface of your cornea, making laser eye surgery a possibility for even those with low corneal thickness.
PRK is also often preferable for milder refractive vision issues, as it’s a simpler surgery; LASIK is better for moderately serious refractive vision issues. If you qualify for both, your Carrot Eye Center eye surgeon will help you decide which best fits your situation
