I was able to discover this eye center after reading some fantastic reviews. I have chosen to give this eye center a chance. I was blown away at how high tech this place was. All the infrastructure is up to date. I felt like a child in a candy shop with all of this technology I’ve never seen before in an ophthalmologist’s office. Dr. Herion was really experienced and professional at explaining everything he noticed in my eyes. All the workers are polite and supportive. I’ve certainly found my favorite eye center office!

Cataracts

What are Cataracts?

A cataract occurs when the eye’s natural lens becomes cloudy. It’s the most common cause of vision loss in people over 40 years old and is known as one of the main causes of blindness in the world.

There are three different types of cataracts:

  • Subcapsular cataracts, which occur at the back of the eye’s lens
  • Nuclear cataracts, which form in the nucleus of the lens and are associated with aging
  • Cortical cataracts, which begin to form in the periphery of the lens and work their way in

At Carrot LASIK & Eye Center, our years of experience allow us to create personalized care plans for every patient, no matter the type or severity of their cataracts.

Signs and Symptoms of Cataracts

During the early development of a cataract, it won’t have much impact on your eyesight, but as it progresses, it will become noticeable: your vision may blur slightly, as if you are looking through clouded glass. Cataracts can make light seem too bright, and things like headlights may cause more glare than they did previously. Other symptoms include frequent changes in eye prescription and colors becoming faded or forming a yellow hue.

As you age, the proteins that comprise the lenses in your eyes begin to change their precise formation and clump together. This causes a film to build in the lens, or, a cataract. In some cases, cataracts aren’t severe enough to need surgery, but many times, they are.

Treatment Options for Cataracts

In the early stages of cataracts, they can be managed with new glasses with a stronger prescription, brighter lighting in dim settings, anti-glare sunglasses to eliminate halos and glare, or even magnifying reading glasses to help improve clarity when text is small.

If these do not help, surgery becomes the only option. At Carrot LASIK & Eye Center, our surgeons are able to customize a cataract surgery for the desired outcomes of each individual patient.

After Cataract Surgery

What is the recovery like after Cataract Surgery?

Your cataract surgery can be approached in two different ways, something we’ll discuss with you during your initial consultation. You’ll choose if you want to live with glasses or without following the procedure. With the first option, we’ll help you decide on the best pair of glasses for you to ensure clear sight in the long-term.

If you decide that you don’t want to live with the hassle of corrective eyewear after your cataract removal, we’ve developed a signature process:

First, we perform the surgery to remove the clouded lens, before letting your eye(s) fully heal. We look at your eyes again to determine if we can use a laser refractive surgery technique to improve your vision further.

Follow-ups are simple and convenient, with our doctors checking to make sure your eyes are healing properly and that clear sight is restored. When both eyes’ cataracts have been removed, the next appointment will be three weeks out to check if glasses or a laser touch-up are needed, and after three more months, you’ll receive a final evaluation.

“Carrot LASIK & Eye Center is the BEST! A year ago, my optometrist recommended that I call Carrot LASIK & Eye Center due to cataracts in both eyes. I put it off because I was afraid to have eye surgery. I have worn glasses for 65 years and I admit I couldn’t see anymore. I was very impressed on my first visit to Carrot. The staff was very attentive and friendly. Dr. Hammond came in and explained everything that would happen before, during and after surgery. He helped take away my fears and I was surprised to know that the whole surgery time would be less than a half hour and I would walk away being able to see.

I could not be happier with the care I received from Carrot LASIK & Eye Center. Do yourself a favor, it’s okay to be afraid but don’t put it off…your eyes will love it.”
