What is Dry Eye?

Dry eye is an eye condition where the quality or quantity of your tears isn’t sufficient to keep your eye properly moisturized. It may be a dysfunction of the tear film, the ducts that produce tears, or the glands that create oil that lubricates the eyes. It can be brought on by a variety of factors, including age, gender, the medications you’re taking, and your environment.

How do I know if I have Dry Eye?

Dry eye occurs mostly in adults but can affect patients of all ages. The symptoms of dry eye include:

  • Burning, irritated eyes
  • Mucus in or around the eyes
  • Red eyes
  • Feeling like something is in your eye
  • Watering eyes
  • Blurry vision and tired eyes

In order to determine if you have dry eye, our eye doctors will conduct a series of tests and examine your eyes. We’ll measure your tear osmolarity to check for any indicators of dry eye. Our team will also look for inflammation markers that may signal the presence of any condition that may result in dry eye. This allows us to build a treatment that attacks the source, not just the symptoms.

Dry Eye Treatment Options

We know that no two sets of eyes are the same, so we customize every dry eye treatment that we deliver. Based on the results of your exam, our doctors will recommend one of the following options.

We can prescribe prescription eye drops for chronic dry eye, including RESTASIS®, Xiidra®, and autologous serum drops. These improve your eyes’ ability to produce tears and stay properly moisturized, effectively alleviating symptoms of chronic dry eye.

Punctal plugs are another treatment we offer. These plugs can be dissolvable or semi-permanent and are easily inserted and removed in our office. Punctal plugs help regulate the drainage of your tears to keep your eye moisturized, and may be used on their own, or along with eye drops as part of a multi-faceted approach.
